The HIV Capacity Building Partners Summit took place between 16-18th March 2011. The over 250 delegates who participated in the Summit were drawn from the following African countries: Botswana, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The international community was represented by delegates from North America, Europe, Asia and far East.
With only 57 months remaining before 2015, partners and stakeholders involved in HIV capacity building in Eastern and Southern Africa realized the importance of coming together not only to assess progress, achievements and lessons in HIV capacity building and share best practices and innovations in critical areas in HIV capacity building, but also identify gaps and ways of closing those gaps through a joint plan of action.
Focusing on MDGs 4, 5 and 6, the Summit was intended to be a platform and an opportunity for teasing out what has been done well, and what can be done better, and what is needed to scale up effective capacity building for sustainable HIV response in East and Southern Africa (ESA). The Summit noted the importance of partnerships and networking among partners. The Summit brought together partners who are willing and able to collaborate to bridge capacity building gaps in HIV and AIDS in ESA. Recognizing the importance of political will and commitment in the achievement of MDGs 4, 5 and 6, the Summit also provided an opportunity to bring governments, regional economic agencies, donors and implementing agencies together to speak with one voice and develop consensus on a joint plan and action. |
